The IIS program—a unique opportunity to support your research

As a premium brand within the dental implants industry, Dentsply Sirona Implants is committed to extensive and sound research and documentation of the products’ performance, efficacy and safety. An important part of our clinical development program is the Investigator Initiated Studies, IIS, where research projects are being initiated and conducted by clinicians worldwide.

Investigator Initiated Studies program

In order to provide products and solutions for all phases of implant therapy, Dentsply Sirona Implants plan and coordinate studies in collaboration with universities and private clinics around the world.

A variety of research activities are ongoing, both within the company but also within the Investigator Initiated Studies program. The IIS program was launched in 2003 and each year approximately 80 IIS applications are received within the program, while approximately 40 percent of the applications are approved and receive support. Currently there are more than 170 supported investigator initiated studies ongoing involving more than 280 investigators in over 20 countries.

The objectives of these studies are determined by the clinicians’ research interests and include a variety of clinical and experimental research areas. The projects conducted range from prospective clinical trials, case reports and case series to in-vitro assays and mechanical studies.

As a participant in the IIS program you can receive financial and/or product support, up to maximum 49 percent of the total study cost.

Benefits for all parties

A highly qualified and experienced participant in the IIS program is Theofilos Koutouzis, Associate Professor, Department of Periodontics at NSU College of Dental Medicine in Florida, USA. He has initiated and conducted several different studies within the IIS program and his studies vary from pre-clinical cases to laboratory projects and clinical documentation studies.

“I really recommend all my colleagues and dental professionals to submit a proposal if and when they have something interesting to explore and document. Participation in IIS provides not only financial support, it has also given me valuable insights and knowledge in organization, structure and research and it has been a great way for me to build my research portfolio. Additionally, it provides a very valuable network and creates partnerships with other researchers and specialists,” says Dr Koutouzis.

Dr. Koutouzis is convinced that the IIS benefits all parties: the clinician or scientist, Dentsply Sirona Implants as well as the industry as a whole.

Develops and grows the implant industry

“This is a two-way relationship. Thanks to IIS the performance, efficacy and safety of Dentsply Sirona Implants products and solutions are being documented and validated and for me as a professional I receive both a valuable support and the possibility to conduct interesting studies. This type of initiative benefits the entire industry to develop and grow,” says Theofilos Koutouzis and concludes: “With IIS everybody is a winner.”
